Was feeling like pasta so we decided to try this place. I was really looking forward to the pasta but my favourite dish was the Chicken Liver entree. Not something I would usually order but my partner really wanted to try it. Actually glad we did cause it wasn't what I was expecting and I loved it so much I wished I had got the main size. I guess it's not for everyone but I do recommend giving it a try if you go here.

Italian bistro food with attentive, professional service. I was concerned that Mario's would have a cafe vibe, but in the evening, there are white tablecloths and a much more bistro feel. We were accommodated quickly even though the restaurant was almost totally full. We felt welcome and the food we ate was tip top quality cooked well. I really enjoyed the chardonnay - I'm not usually a drinker of white wine but it was a warm evening and chardonnay was just the perfect tipple. The gluten free dessert was extraordinary. Sweetened with dates, it made such a wonderful change from a chocolate brownie - if you know, you know.

Had chicken liver with marsala sauce starter after reading a good review on google. Tasty! Had spaghetti bolognaise, spaghetti’s with mussel and the special lamb loin with mash potatoes. Spaghetti al dente, classic done well, the mussel spaghetti although looked plain was very garlicky- yum; nice sear to the lamb. Finished with cheese cake to share. We were served by an older gentleman who initially may have appeared standoff-ish, but was actually attentive to our table, explaining the special and the dessert cake options. Not often you find a little restaurant like this outside Italy. We were walking in the area of Fitzroy, and were attracted to this place by the simplicity of the restaurant. We were met at the door by a very friendly girl who sat us immediately. Ruby our server, came to our table and recommended some of their pasta dishes. All were terrific. We ordered salad, calamari, and our pasta. The servings are plentiful and delicious. At the end of our meal we all had their coffee. Best macchiato and cappuccino we had in the city while we were in this city. Again, the service by all of the stuff made a huge difference. Ruby you were the best..!

Service was good. The risotto for some reason was very crunchy :) the “crispy” fried potatoes was a bit disappointing considering it came out cold. The penne and arancini were good. Definitely not worth the hype, too expensive for mediocre food.

Just adore this place. Was reluctant to try because of all the “overrated” accusations on google - BUT IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE GO!!! This place is one of the only restaurants i’ve been that manages to balance humility with outstanding hospitality. Complimentary bread before the meal?? now there’s a custom i thought went extinct. This place is not just a neighbourhood gem; but a diamond in Fitzroy. P.S. Get the tiramisu.

I’ve walked past Mario’s over a thousand times and finally paid a visit. They don’t accept bookings and I can see why they don’t need to… it was super busy without feeling too overcrowded and loud. Between two adults, we ordered the lasagna and penne ragu special. Both dishes were incredibly packed with flavour and heat (temperature, not spice). They also had exquisite consistency in the sauce. The chilli oil was actually hot and had sliced chilli (some places don’t add fresh chilli anymore). Service was extremely attentive. They still have hand written dockets for each table which I thought was cute and authentic. I’ll definitely be back to try the other dishes.

Enjoyed wonderful pastas at this authentic Italian diner tonight! The penne amatriciana was wow😲 we loved it! The arancini was also a great starter. But the star of the show was the tiramisu!! Overall, will deffo be coming back!!
